21st Century Learning

21st Century Learning hired me as a graphic and UI designer for their online courses in teaching arabic. Provided an already-created template, I was asked to redesign the template's iconography and banner heads to give what was an otherwise bland template depth and eye-catching aesthetic. To reflect the abstract nature of the course titles (such as "Learning Objectives" or "Key Resources"), I recommended using abstract primitives to symbolize the titles, allowing the UI to be as cross-cultural as possible.

the Plexus Syndicate

"The Plexus Syndicate" is a fictional corporation in the science-fiction economic and political simulator EVE-Online. While being a completely virtual organization, they approached me for a large amount of non-virtual graphic design and web design work that required a multitude of various skills, including CMS implementation, database management, full-page print advertising, banner ads, desktops, and even promotional videos. In the process of creating their graphical persona, I also implemented many non-fictional tools for their considerably large community's use, including forums and a corporate scoreboard that directly communicates with the EVE-Online server. Examples of the various work done for them are shown in my portfolio.

O'Keefe Communications

O'Keefe Communications, a media event and communications production company, hired me to take care of a number of jobs for them as a contractor during the late summer/fall period. My roles included that of a graphic designer, preparing digital resources for post-production, and assembling Keynote presentations for a number of clients. During my time there I worked on projects for Clark Construction, the American Society of Landscape Architects, the US Postal Service, and the Smithsonian Institute. In particular, I developed the visual aesthetic, ID, and, ultimately, the final show presentation, for the Smithsonian's 2008 Philatelic Gala Awards, examples of which are shown here.

good design is more than just creating an inspiring form. good design comes from tailoring that form to its function. thus "entities should not be multiplied beyond necessity" (william of occam, 1249) is our design philosophy. we modify our approach according to the client's needs and their targeted audience, but do so while providing a form that is invigorating, distinct, and uniquely advanced. good design is good communication. to design effectively is to communicate effectively.
